    CO2-Navigator 

Addressing global climate change and ameliorating its consequences are among the great challenges of the 21st century. More and more companies are calculating the effects and risks of climate change on their markets. The substantial increase in greenhouse gas emissions over the last 50 years is likely to cause major disruptions in Earth's climate. Climate change impacts ecosystems (e.g. extreme weather events, rising sea levels) and also the social, political, and economic environment of companies. One important political response is the introduction of emissions trading systems. Attempts to limit CO2 emissions changes corporate decisions by influencing revenues and costs, especially opportunity costs. Future economic and social developments as well as technological innovations must be considered in this decision process.

The aim of the project was to assist companies in identifying and evaluating possible strategies for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and to encourage adaptation of climate-change related modifications in their business activities. A decision model was been developed that explicitly considers the financial risk associated with a non-CO2 informed strategy and compared it with the economic benefits of a CO2 aware strategy and technology, including the valuation of future strategic options. This decision model illustrated the mutual dependence of CO2 certificate prices, the value at risk, and real strategic options. The following steps were accomplished:

• Plausible scenarios: Determination of a reasonable number of rational scenarios
• Quantification of risk reduction potential: Identification of the risks of not including CO2 certificates in the corporate risk portfolio and determination of the related costs
• Evaluation of adaptation options: Identification and evaluation of potential strategies under an existing emissions trading scheme, consideration of future uncertainties, and the implementation of possible flexible corporate decisions
• CO2-Navigator: Aggregation of the decision model into a user-friendly software programme

CO2-Navigator is part of the Klimazwei programme of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
