Environmental and economic evaluation of transport processes
Decision making in transportation processes is one of the major drivers of the environmental performance within companies. Transport processes cause environmental impacts mainly by their energy consumption and their air emissions. To consider environmental impacts in management decisions a model (tool) for the evaluation of transportation alternatives had to be developed.
The model should contain following steps: Firstly, system boundaries for the transportation task has to be defined. Then a suitable functional unit has to be determined. After defining of the transport process alternatives, ecological and economic consequences has to be recognized and evaluated. Finally both evaluation will led together to support a decision making about transportation. Consequently, tasks like selection and planning of transportation relations, employment of means of transportation, planning of locations and finally the performing of operative business can be fulfilled environmentally sound.
