Wireless LAN (WiFi) on TUD campus

Wireless LAN (WiFi) on campus of the TU Dresden

The wireless network has been gradually expanded. A list of wifi-supported locations is available.

Usage requirements

The following requirements must be met to be able to use the wireless network:

  • valid ZIH-login (login@tu-dresden.de) or a login with DFN-Roaming Partners
  • a WiFi-capable notebook, PDA or similar in coverage of an access point location (up to 150m with visual contact)
  • browser with SSL support (https) (all commonly available browser support this)
  • special software for encrypted connections, according to the operating system

The following table shows the characteristics of the two possible networks. We recommend the usage of the encrypted network, however a one-time installation procedure is necessary.

Name (SSID) of the WiFi network VPN/WEB VPN/WEB eduroam
Anmeldung via browser via VPN via Supplicant
Encryption unencrypted encrypted via VPN (256bit AES) WPA/TKIP with 802.1x EAP/TTLS Radius authorisation
Software requirements

Any operating system with a SSL-capable browser

Cisco VPN Client
(Windows 2000, XP & Vista,
Linux, MacOSX)
Windows XP:
Supplicant
Windows7, Linux, MacOSX: none
Recommended for only for short-time users or for users without supplicants (PDA, mobile phones etc).
note: all data are transmitted openly
users who already use VPN all users

MacOS X
Linux (see note)
Android

Login via browser (VPN/WEB)

To log onto the network, simply enter any webpage adress into your browser. You will be redirected to the Cisco login screen, where you are prompted for your login (login@tu-dresden.de) and your password. Please be aware that all further data will be transmitted without encryption over the air and hence it is very easy for others to spy on your connection!

eduroam - Notes for installation under Linux

  • Security: WPA/TKIP oder WPA2/AES
  • EAP-Type: EAP-TTLS
  • anonymous identity: anonymous@tu-dresden.de
  • CA-Certificate: TUD-CACert.pem
  • inner authentication method: PAP
  • login: <login>@tu-dresden.de
  • password: <ZIH-password>
  • ip address allocation:  DHCP

Most common mistakes

From our experience, these are the most common mistakes that occur when setting up a WiFi connection on a laptop:

  • Notebooks with an integrated WiFi circuit (Centrino) almost always have a switch to enable or disable the WiFi hardware. Usually this is also indicated with a LED which glows if WiFi is activated. Eventually, please look out for keyboard shortcut to do this. Sometimes, a driver is necessary to put this switch into action.
  • Sometimes a network bridge is installed under WindowsXP - Settings - Network. Please disable network bridges for a WiFi connection!

Driver installation

Usually, but not necessarily, you will have to install drivers for your WiFi hardware. Since this is dependend on your operating system as well as on your WiFi card we cannot provide a universal guide for installation. However, the user guidance office will assist you in this if necessary. However, please be aware that you yourself are responsible for the installation of these drivers and accept liability for all risks regarding security or damage of your system.

Participation with the Roaming project by the DFN

The TU Dresden takes part with the Roaming project by the DFN. That means that students, staff and guests of colleges and other universities which also take part in this project are granted access to the TU Dresden WiFi networks. In return, if TU Dresden students / staff members should be in their locations, they are granted access to their networks with your TU Dresden ZIH login. Technically, this is realized though IEEE 802.1x and distributed RADIUS servers. Network SSID's for this are also eduroam and VPN/WEB. All other settings like IP adresses and the gateway will be sent to you via DHCP.
