Institutional strategies – advancing top-level university research

An institutional strategy aims to strengthen a university as a whole so that it can play in the champions league of universities. It comprises all aspects of a university as an institution. »The Excellence Initiative provides funding for institutional strategies that are aimed at developing top-level university research in Germany and increasing its competitiveness at an international level. The funding covers all measures that allow universities to develop and expand their areas of international excellence over the long term and to establish themselves as leading institutions in international competition. This will make a significant contribution to strengthening science and research in Germany in the long term and increasing the visibility of current research excellence. «, as it is defined by the DFG (German Research Foundation).

The Dresden master plan for the institutional strategy

The institutional strategy made for TU Dresden is a master plan for the next years to which the development of the university will be aligned to. It sets out a series of measures that will now be kicked off and can be further advanced with the funds that may be used from 2012. During the last two decades, TU Dresden has gone through a dynamic development process and can now benefit from the high level attained for its further advancement. Funding through the excellence initiative would definitely facilitate this process.

On 15 December 2010, the managing bodies of TU Dresden started up 15 teams that worked on the institutional strategy. Their task was either to work out the planned measures in further detail and also to start executing the first steps of their realisation. Three main fields of work had been defined: structures and processes within the university and outside with external institutions, the close networking with external partners in research, teaching and infrastructure and also measures that will make TU Dresden even more attractive for the best brains.
