[GB] Development and Application of Layout Constraints in an Coordinate-based User Interface
In this work we propose adding content-based layout constraints to a coordinate-based user interface. Starting from a analysis of currently existing interface layout paradigms, the process of localization and thereby applying changing contents to controls is explained. The major problem lies in inappropriate sizes of modified elements and the resulting need to adjust the layout of the interface. The hereby proposed solution is to add a set of layout constraints that can be automatically applied. Using an analysis of common control kinds, their content-based size requirements, as well as screen real estate concerns, a set of composable constraints is developed. Finally, a reference implementation for defining and automatically applying these is provided using the Cocoa AppKit Framework on Mac OS X.
