Formalitäten zum Studienbeginn

Registering with the Resident’s Registration Office (Einwohneramt)

The registration of residence must be completed within 7 days after acquiring a flat or student dormitory room. Where you register depends on where you live.  

You will need the following documents in order to register:

  • Passport or Personal Identity card
  • Your rental agreement from Studentenwerk or a private renter that gives your exact address

If registering in Dresden for the first time, we recommend that you visit the following registration office:

  • Zentrale Meldestelle Altstadt (Central Registration Office)
    Theaterstraße 11 (near Postplatz)
    the Foreign Resident’s Office is also located there.

    Opening Hours:
    Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 8am-8pm
    Wednesday:  8am-2pm
    Saturday:     8am-1pm

Other Registration Offices in Dresden:

Foreign Resident’s Office (Ausländerbehörde)

An application to obtain a resident’s permit (Aufenthaltsbewilligung) must be completed within 3 months after entering the Federal Republic of Germany. This is done at Foreign Resident’s Office. Which office you need to go to depends on where you reside.

Exception: For a maximum stay of 3 months, you only have to register at the Resident’s Registration Office (Einwohneramt)

The following documents must be submitted along with Resident’s Permit application:

  • Completed application form (available at the International Office or Foreign Resident's Office)
  • Passport or Personal Identy card
  • Proof of admission to the University
  • Enrollment confirmation
  • Rental agreement (copy)
  • Confirmation of Registration at the Resident’s Registration Office (Einwohneramt)
  • Proof of Health Insurance
  • Proof of Adequate Financial Means

Opening a Bank Account


To open a bank account in Germany you will need the following:

  • Passport or Personal Identity card
  • Proof of Registration with the Resident’s Registration Office (Einwohneramt)
  • Proof of admission to the University

Sparkassen banks are located not far from the AAA, one on Mommenstraße and one on Nürnberger Straße. Other banks may be found in the town centre.
