Summer semester 2022
Blow-Up - Federal Institute of Photography Zeche Zollverein Essen
Module nr.: PRO_5-VE_HB
Mentoring: Prof. Ansgar Schulz, Prof. Benedikt Schulz, Gerhard Heise, Christian Wischalla
Photography inspires and fascinates us anew every day. It manages in an incomparable way to show us things that otherwise remain hidden. The roots of the history of photography go back further than we think. Photography confronts us with stories and aspects of life that we only perceive when we take a closer look. Probably the most famous representative of everyday photography was the photo reporter Alfred Eisenstaedt. He had people of contemporary history in front of his camera as well as completely unknown people. Digitization brought with it unimagined possibilities for image processing. Artists use the technique in the most diverse creative ways: from Pep Ventosa, who digitally superimposes countless individual images, to the linear post-processing of Sabine Wild and Isabelle Menin. German photography has enjoyed growing recognition in the history of the medium since the mid-19th century. Photographs are more popular than ever, and many contemporary German photographers enjoy national and international esteem.
Why now a Federal Institute of Photography? The existing difficulties in collecting and restoring photography have arisen from the nature of the medium itself. In its almost 200-year history, extremely different types of photography have attained very different levels of appreciation. That is why the Federal Institute of Photography is to be established as a national and international beacon project. It will give photography the status it deserves. The Federal Institute will safeguard outstanding photographic collections in the long term. In recent years, a commission of experts has developed a concept for such an institute in Germany and promoted a multifaceted public discourse. A feasibility study was conducted to determine the space requirements and to clarify the question of location. The results were presented to the public in spring. The task this semester is to plan a new building for the Federal Photo Institute on the grounds of the Zeche Zollverein in Essen based on this feasibility study. The students are expected to produce contemporary, creative and innovative architectural contributions and answers to crucial questions of design and construction in today's world. An intensive examination of sustainable building methods and material selection in conception and construction is required. Construction- and operation-related climate-damaging effects are to be minimized as far as possible.

Winter semester 2021/22
Built on sand - New building of the beach hall an Spiekeroog
Module nr.: PRO_5-VE_HB
Mentoring: Prof. Ansgar Schulz, Prof. Benedikt Schulz, Gerhard Heise, Christian Wischalla
The North Sea spa Spiekeroog is one of the East Frisian islands in the Wadden Sea of Lower Saxony. Spiekeroog is one idyll. There are only the bare essentials here, plus the North Sea with sand, waves and wind. Beyond the small village centre, the island is a large dune landscape with a huge sandy beach facing the sea. The planned area is about 1 km walking distance from the village centre. The path through the dunes leads exclusively along narrow paths, some of which are paved with cobblestones. A new beach hall is to be designed in this area of tension. The current buildings date back to the 1970s and no longer meet the functional requirements. Essentially, the new beach hall to be planned includes the functions of a large guest room with complete catering, an outdoor restaurant, a workshop, various conference and seminar areas as well as modern living quarters for the seasonal and year-round accommodation of the lifeguards.
The project is committed to sustainable and sensitive development in a special way. In view of the special challenges of the time, the island of Spiekeroog and the site in particular, a sustainable construction method and choice of materials is prescribed. The structurally sealed area with the task is limited to a maximum. Spiekeroog is car-free and deliveries are made via cargo bikes or small electric transporters. Materials, construction, prefabrication and assembly have to be designed with this in mind. The students are expected to engage intensively with these topics during the conception and construction. A special focus of the assignment is the valorisation of the special and sensitive natural experience area. Due to its unique location, the future ensemble will develop an identity-defining effect. The demand for convincing architecture is equally high.

The Free State of Saxony would like to improve the framework conditions for the Mounted Police in the coming years. An important part is the relocation of the unit from Großerkmannsdorf to Dresden.
