Fibre composites have always been a part of nature and are increasingly being used in modern lightweight construction. In addition to glass and basalt fibres, carbon fibres in particular are gaining in importance due to their high strength, low density and good processability. However, their increasing use is leading to growing quantities of fibre-containing waste, the disposal and recycling of which pose major challenges. The aim is to enable the fibres to be returned to the material cycle through circular value creation and to obtain high-quality secondary raw materials. The WIR-V1.2 joint project is developing processes for the efficient treatment of carbon fibre-containing waste and is investigating these in the laboratory and in a pilot plant. One focus is on integrating the recycling process into existing production chains, particularly in the construction industry with carbon concrete. The aim of the project is to develop processes and technologies that enable high-quality material recycling of carbon fibres, thereby significantly reducing resource consumption, energy expenditure and CO₂ emissions. In addition, quality-assured secondary fibres are to be made available for new applications in construction and other industrial sectors in order to strengthen the sustainability and competitiveness of the regional economy in the long term.
The Institute for Construction Management is overseeing implementation as the network coordinator, drawing up specifications for industrial application and analysing the necessary regulations. The establishment of a model region in the Elbe Valley in Saxony will lay the foundations for driving forward the transformation from a linear to a circular economy in the field of CFRP recycling.
