Abstract
In order to implement the Flood Protection Concept, the State Reservoir Administration of Saxony has planned to build Flood Retention Basin near Bärenstein. For this purpose, a leafy rockfill dam with asphalt core is planned to dam the upstream of Biela, the confluence with the river Müglitz. The sluice parallel to the channel can be closed during the flood event. Then, the water in the upstream flows through the bypass. A counter flow stilling basin is applied for energy conversion. The water then is deflected to the weir and flowing through the channel.
The aim of this thesis was to investigate the hydraulic characteristics of the counter flow stilling basin of flood retention basin Bärenstein by simulating the model designs. A three dimensional simulation employs the software FLOW-3D. The simulation results of the three variants were analyzed, discussed, and evaluated in terms of characteristic flow effects for FDR1 and FDR2.
In addition, the analyses of the physical model tests were performed in the laboratory of the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Technical Hydromechanics at Technische Universität Dresden. It is including the flow characteristics to the counter flow stilling basin, the weir and column, and the channel. The turbulent kinetic energy was dissipated through the counter flow stilling basin. To optimize the energy conversion through the numerical model simulations, it requires further investigations.
