ECTS
ECTS, the European Credit Transfer System, was developed by the Commission of the European Union in order to provide common procedures to guarantee academic recognition of studies abroad. It provides a way of measuring and comparing learning achievements and transferring them from one institution to another.
ECTS is based on the principle of mutual understanding and trust between the participating universities. The few rules of the ECTS concern information (about the courses offered), mutual consent (between the home and host university) and the use of credits (as an indication to students of the amount of work involved) and are intended to reinforce this mutual understanding and trust. Every department participating in ECTS not only describes the content of its courses, but also the allocation of credits.
