Abstract
The Dachstein Massif, Styria, Austria, is one of the favorite skiing centers in Austria and one of the regions which are affected by the global glacier retreat. For decades the retreat has been observed and measured. Because of the circumstances it is important not just to observe the condition in a scientific way, but also enhance the interest of the public and illustrate the process in an understandable way.rnBased on a multi-temporal data set, the glacial retreat and the consequent volume change between 1850 and 2009 at the Hallstatt and Schladming Glaciers can be visual-ised. The aim of this study is to test and evaluate different methods of visualization. The main focus is the comparison between classical cartographic mapping, which takes place in two-dimensional space, and three-dimensional space in which the perception of the untrained viewer becomes easier, to provide, as much as possible, a comprehensive understanding of dynamic changes.rnIn this work, one data set is processed and applied in several visualization methods. For the results, animations are provided as well as static representations. The glacier-bed especially plays an important role, because of the new depictions of the surface under-neath the ice-mass.
