Teaching and Research Field Site "Grundwasser"
The existing teaching and research field "Groundwater" at the Pirna site enables the performance of a wide range of hydrogeological experiments in the context of research as well as the practical demonstration of established and new hydrogeological methods in the context of student training and and advanced training courses.
The following main topics can be covered by the teaching and research field "Groundwater":
- Determination of geohydraulic parameters for groundwater flow and transport (e.g., performing natural and forced hydraulic gradient tests) and geochemical parameters (e.g., key parameter acquisition via point and representative sampling)
- Evaluation of single wells and wellfields for groundwater recharge (including infiltration experiments using 1 "and 2" direct push injection wells and experimental evaluation of well aging processes)
- Development and evaluation of innovative exploration methods (including tracer technologies using the stable isotopes oxygen-18 and deuterium (see stable isotope laboratory of IGW)
- Observation of the interaction of the receiving water Elbe and the fluvial aquifer with high temporal dynamics
- Calculation of heat transport and storage processes in the subsurface, taking into account exchange processes, etc. with the atmosphere
- (Further) development of analytical and numerical methods for the description of the conservative and reactive transport of solutes in groundwater
Existing infrastrucure at the site:
- 11 x 1 "direct-push groundwater observation wells
- 7 x 5 "groundwater observation wells in the first aquifer
- 2 levels with multi-level measurement points
- dug well for groundwater extraction
- Precipitation collector
Existing equipment for field tests at the site:
- Submersible and suction pumps in different sizes for sampling and pumping tests (Grundfos MP1, Ebara Winner 4N, Subline T3-23)
- Field peristaltic pump for injection of marker substances (Prominent Sigma3)
- Currentless systems for groundwater sampling (e.g. bailers and foot valve pumps)
- Multi-parameter sensor module for in-situ determination of key parameters (UIT MSM-S2)
- Mobile spectral fluorimeter for the measurement of fluorescent dyes (including uranin, eosin, sulphorhodamine B) (GGun-FL Fluorometer)
- Flow-through cell for representative groundwater sampling (Behr Labortechnik Aquabox)
- Various packer systems for tracer tests
- Various pressure and temperature measuring sensors with logging function (Solinst Levellogger)

Various systems for sediment sampling in the vadose zone (Makita Drilling hammer)
Modernization of the "Groundwater" teaching and research field
The teaching and research field "Groundwater" will be comprehensively modernized and expanded in the next year. This is intended to improve the conditions for student training and to increase the opportunities for carrying out hydrogeological experiments as part of research work and the development of new methods. The building measures are funded in the framework of the investigation program for the improvement of the infrastructure for teaching and research by the TU Dresden.
Future additional infrastructure:
- 10 " well for aquifer pumping tests incl. permanently installed high performance deep well pump
- 10 " well for bank filtration incl. permanently installed deep well pump
- 5 " groundwater observation well for the second aquifer (for comparison with the upper, first aquifer)
- 12 x 2 "direct-push groundwater observation wells
- Tracer test field with multiple direct-push 1 " observation points
- Various water injection elements (incl. infiltration ditch, infiltration basin, DP injection lances)
- Multi-parameter weather station
- Walk-in soil sampling trench
- Water storage facilities for 4 x approx. 5 m³
- Water pipe to the nearby Elbe River
