Specialization in water management, hydrology and material flow management (formerly waste management and contaminated sites)
The exploration, extraction, distribution and purification of water as a food and resource is one of the most basic technical and social achievements. The study of Hydro Sciences teaches you the scientific and engineering know-how and practical skills. This includes the description of water and material flows, the determination of physical, chemical and biological components in hydrosystems and the engineering and technical control of water production, water use, water treatment and wastewater treatment.
Educational goals and career perspective
The students acquire general and in-depth knowledge and skills in order to identify and appropriately present problems of hydrology and interdisciplinary problems, to analyze them with scientific methods as well as to independently develop possible solutions.
The basics include the subjects of hydrodynamics, water production, drinking water supply and sanitation.
An in-depth understanding and skills, incorporating the latest scientific knowledge, are acquired by the students through a specialist specialization. In the third semester, students will choose one of the three specializations Water Management, Hydrology and Material Flow Management. In the modules of the general recess, the method implementation and independent processing of water management problems with scientific reference are in the foreground. The individual qualification is guaranteed by a range of elective modules.
Which tasks are addressed in the study?
- Water extraction, water use, water discharge and discharge control
- Multiple and circulatory use of water and its ingredients by exploring the quantities and qualities of water required for different uses
- Analysis of water resources of different landscapes and climates
- Data analysis of observations and measurements of natural processes
- Predicting extreme situations (high and low water)
- Balancing of the water balance components
- Exploration and evaluation of water resources and their rational and sustainable use
- Planning and operation of waste management plants
- Recovering valuable material
- Evaluation and remediation of contaminated sites
- Loading of soils with pollutants
- Measures to protect water resources
- Energy production from waste
- Cost-benefit analysis of remediation technologies
The study prepares for activities in the hydrological and environmental practice in preparation for the Master course.
Specialization in Water Management:
The students are able to actively contribute to the planning, construction and operation of technical facilities for the extraction, storage and redistribution of the limited resource water.
Specialization Hydrology:
The students learn the common tools to analyze different landscapes and climate zones in the natural and engineering sciences and to use the water cycle.
Specialization Material Flow Management:
The students are able to assess the influence of valuable substances and pollutants and to assess their ecological and economic importance.
Study program and modules
The course covers six semesters. Each student has to pass 19 general compulsory amounting to 110 credits. After the second semester one of the three specilisations Water Management, Hydrology or Material Flow Management has to be chosen. Depending on the specialisation, 6 to 8 further compulsory modules amounting to 40 credits has to be passed. For further individual qualification, each student has to choose elective moduls amounting to 20 credits. There are 20 further elective modules besides the modules of the two other speciasations. The bachelor thesis is part of the bachelor exam, which completes the course. It is written during the 6th semester. The processing time is 12 weeks. The aim of the work is the independent handling of a problem with scientific methods within a given deadline. 10 credits will be awarded for the Bachelor thesis.
The exact module description can be found on the German website.
