Core area of my research is the efficient air transportation system with a focus on data-driven (machine learning) and model-based approaches (simulations). Currently I research in particular on these topics:
- dynamic, flight-centric management of airspace (enroute, terminal manouvering area, urban air mobility),
- inter-airport coordination,
- performance-based airport operations (air- and landside), as well as
- advanced concepts for the future air transportation system.
Furthermore, I’m research fellow of the Air Traffic Management Research Institute at the NTU Singapore in the area of artificial intelligence and data analytics.
CURRENT RESEARCH FOCUS
Systematic analysis of the air transportation system
In the context of efficient operational structures, systematically occurring delays at commercial airports and in airspaces are analysed. The evaluation of improvement potentials is carried out with the focus on characteristic infra-/ traffic structures of the operated network. Recommendations for action for users (e.g. airlines, passengers) and operators (e.g. airport, air traffic control) are developed. These analyses are carried out using data-driven and model-based approaches. They primarily serve to investigate systematic dependencies of operational inefficiencies (e.g. delays), which regularly influence the performance of the air traffic system through real boundary conditions (weather, capacity, location in the traffic network). By investigating different optimization concepts (e.g. dynamic airspace sectorization), the developed solution strategies can be systematically evaluated within a model environment (e.g. for cost savings, reduction of plan deviations) and further developed.

Supervision
I supervise student projects covering a wide range of topics, especially in the field of data-driven and model-based analytics. If you are interested, tasks in the field of ADS-B Data analysis (data analytics) and data-driven modelling (machine learning) are possible. The work should contribute to an optimized balance of demand and capacity (Air Traffic Flow and Capacity Management) and performance-based airport management (A-CDM). Topics such as optimized airspace structures and operations, inter-modal passenger transport, digitalization and automation in aviation, and traffic flow management could also be the focus of student theses.

Habilitation (2019): The future of aircraft ground operations
I investigated the effects of automated process flows in aircraft ground operations. Therefore, I designed a connected aircraft cabin (cyber-physical system), developed a process predictor (machine learning), evaluated infrastructural changes, developed a dynamically adaptive process design (genetic algorithms) and, in close cooperation with industrial partners, implemented it in realistic test scenarios. The cumulative work consists of the following five publications: Field trial measurements to validate a stochastic aircraft boarding model, Implementation and application of a stochastic aircraft boarding model, Dynamic change of aircraft seat condition for fast boarding, A metric for the real-time evaluation of the aircraft boarding progress, and Fast aircraft turnaround enabled by reliable passenger boarding.
Dissertation (2010): Airport and Terminal Operations
For the use of virtual simulation environments for the analysis of passenger movements within airport terminals, I developed an individual-oriented movement model, which maps group dynamic effects to passenger-specific interactions. These interactions have both operational and strategic/tactical backgrounds. The basics of the operative passenger behavior are described in my PhD thesis Entwicklung eines individuenbasierten Modells zur Abbildung des Bewegungsverhaltens von Passagieren im Flughafenterminal.
