Shumpei Kamo (master of engineering) is a research associate and a Ph.D. candidate in Transport Engineering at the Chair of Air Transport and Logistics. He studied aeronautics and astronautics at The University of Tokyo, Japan, and received his bachelor's degree of engineering in 2015 and his master's degree of engineering in 2017.

During his studies, he worked as a research intern at German Aerospace Center in Braunschweig (DLR Braunschweig) in 2015 and engaged in resilience modeling of stochastic landing traffic behaviors. In 2016, he also worked as a research intern at JAL-CAE Flight Training in Japan and carried out experiments with a B787 full-flight simulator.

He joined TU Dresden in 2018. His Ph.D. research aims to develop trajectory optimization methods for descent/approach aircraft so that their trajectories are robust against weather forecast uncertainty. He also extended the robust trajectory optimization and integrated it into approach sequencing in a single optimization framework. The theoretical fundamentals he employs in his Ph.D. work include the robust optimal control, the pseudospectral method, and the Mixed-Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP). He always tries to make his research not only theoretical and methodological, but also operationally oriented, aiming to build bridges between theory and practice. To achieve this, he develops models and scenarios that reflect actual operations and performs optimization with them. Since 2021, he has been carrying out collaborative research with Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), Spain. In April and May 2022, he is staying in Spain to drive the collaborative works.

He worked for the CDO-Speedbrakes project until 2022 and developed optimization algorithms for Continuous Descent Operations (CDO) trajectories so that they are robust against uncertainties in weather forecasts. Currently, he is working for the S-AMAN project and engages in modeling of hazards relevant to approach traffic in Terminal Maneuvering Area (TMA), and countermeasures taken by Air Traffic Control (ATC).

His research interests include: robust aircraft trajectory optimization, approach sequencing, onbord-ground synchronization, robust optimal control, and arrival manager (AMAN).
