Welcome to the research project page: "Active Mobility: Better Quality of Life in Metropolitan Areas

TU Dresden carried out an online survey (from Sept-Dec 2017) as part of the research project "Active Mobility: Better Quality of Life in Metropolitan Areas" on behalf of the  German Environment Agency (UBA) in 12 German cities. The goal was to learn more about what motivates people to cycle more often and walk or why they use other means of transport for their daily routines.

We thank all those who participated in this online survey.

As part of the project, the "Grundzüge einer bundesweiten Fußverkehrsstrategie" (Fundamentals of a national foot-traffic strategy) were developed by the German Institute for Urban Affairs (Difu). The publication entitled "Geht doch!" was published by the German Environment Agency (UBA) in October 2018. The publication can be found on their website hier.

The research project team can be contacted under the following e-mail address and would be more than happy to answer any questions:

We have compiled the most important information about the research project "Active Mobility" below:

General information about the research project "Active Mobility"

Active mobility (in the form of mobility on foot, on wheels, driven by human muscle power, autonomously or mixed with different means of transport) is important for the functioning of urban and rural transport.

High traffic quality as well as the accessibility of many destinations can only be guaranteed in urban areas if the means of transport for pedestrians and cyclists, public transport and carsharing (environmental network) are promoted to a greater extent. In addition, urban areas offer very good conditions for the environmental network in general and active mobility in particular due to the high density and short distances.

Pedestrian and bicycle traffic are often considered separately in research and practice. Synergies and conflicts between the two modes of transport are thus insufficiently recognized and used. The central objective of the project "Active Mobility" is the integrated consideration of the two means of transport--foot and bicycle--as an important pillar of urban transport. The state of knowledge on active mobility should be collected and expanded, points of conflict and opportunities of both modes of movement should be identified in order to formulate options for action and strategies for promoting active mobility at the federal, state and local levels.

As a prerequisite for the formulation of action strategies, we first have to research the foundation. For this we have chosen the method of an online survey. With the online survey, we can explore the key issues that inspire people to walk and cycle, or why they use other means of transport for their daily routines.

For that we need your help. Please participate in the online survey.

We thank you in advance for your willingness to participate!

A look inside the survey

We would like to give you some information about the questionnaire to let you know what you can expect to be asked.

Questions about your living environment or your neighborhood:
In this questionnaire, we ask for a description of your living environment and the quality of the streetscape at your place of residence. We also want to know more about which features of the streetscape you generally consider to be particularly important and how well you can walk from the apartment to specific destinations.

Questions about your mobility patterns:
In order to establish a picture of overall daily mobility, we also enquire about the frequency of use of each individual means of transportation (in the section called "Mobility Patterns"). In addition, physical activity is queried in this context. These are the standard survey topics provided in the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Questions about attitudes, motivation and barriers concerning active mobility:
This is the most important part of the entire questionnaire. This section discusses your personal attitude toward active mobility. We also want to know more about what motivates you to walk more or ride a bike or what might be stopping you.

Characteristics of your household and your person:
You've made it!
So far we have collected general information about your relationship to active mobility. Please fill in some information about your household and your person. We assure you that privacy is very important to us; all information provdided remains private and anonymous.

We kindly ask you to participate and thank you for taking part in our research project!
