Abstract:
We study the relationship between local participation rates in climate strikes, also known as Fridays for Future, and various socioeconomic outcomes. The results are suggestive for a reverse intergenerational transmission mechanism, in which children transmit their increased environmental awareness to their parents. In the first part of the empirical analysis, we study the initial diffusion of the FFF movement across Germany and propose a novel measure of local strike participation using cell phonebased tracking data. With the help of a rich fixed-effects model, we identify the number and origin of protesters for more than 2,300 strikes. In the second part of the empirical analysis, we investigate the relationship between climate strike participation, public opinion, attitudes of political elites and electoral outcomes.
