The aim of this seminar for early-stage doctoral candidates is to provide basic elements for conducting research in the field of social sciences. The focus of the seminar is mainly on empirical research – i.e. based on case studies and/or on other types of empirical data (primary and secondary). Emphasis is put on the originality of the issues to be explored and on the rigour in designing the research. This is intended to be an introductory seminar and addresses the following issues/questions: - Basic insights from epistemology - Central issues of research designs and research methods - Qualitative and quantitative research - The research process The seminar gives some fundamental knowledge of designing a sound (doctoral) research project. The seminar will be partly based on contributions of the participants and built on them. Examples of research proposals from the field of social sciences will be presented and key design aspects of the researches will be highlighted. Additionally, questions of operationalisation of research, and ‘hands-on‘ skills in the utilisation of different research methods will be discussed. Caveats and limitations of the operationalisation will also be raised. Finally, participants will get an overview about different methods for analysing their data on the basis of the research design. This is not meant to provide them any in-depth insight into how to analyse qualitative or quantitative data. The aim of the workshop is to present different options, which might be more explored in detail through specific methodological courses in a later state of research. |
