Research Project: The Past Futures of Artificial Intelligence
Discipline: History
Doctoral advisors: Prof. Dr. Thomas Hänseroth, Prof. Dr. Christian Schwarke
The PhD project deals with the topic of artificial intelligence (AI) from the perspective of the history of technology. The phenomenon of AI is to be located and analyzed in its historical context. We aim to explain the cultural and social structures on which the development of AI was based, the historical continuities and discontinuities that prevailed, and the academic and intellectual tradition in which the current development is located.
Using an approach that is based on the history of ideas and concepts, an analysis of the context in which AI was developed will be carried out. We will thus focus on the change in content of the concept itself as well as on the hopes, expectations, and plans for the future associated with it.
A main focus of the work will be the research of German-German AI history. Based on an extensive study of source material, an overview of the development of AI in West- and East-Germany will be developed. This will be followed by an inner-German comparison, which on the one hand considers AI development in two different political systems in the context of international system confrontation, and on the other hand national paths of innovation and technology.
Finally, one of the research goals of this study is to create a suitable periodization offer for the history of AI and to bring it into relation with common cultural-historical concepts in the context of contemporary history.
For the doctoral project, a situational approach will be chosen, in which the methods are constituted by the research question. The evaluation of sources will be based on historical discourse analysis. The corpus of sources will be supplemented by interviews with contemporary witnesses.
