This project analyses the representation of communal identity in the short fiction penned by various contemporary black British writers, such as Hanif Kureishi, Jackie Kay and Hari Kunzru. Based on a combination of deconstructivist philosophical concepts of community and postcolonial conceptualisations, the project investigates how the short story serves these writers as a vehicle not only to imagine "a new way of being British" (Kureishi) but also to challenge exclusionary and monocultural notions of community.

Bettina Jansen's Ph.D. thesis was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2018. Please check out the publisher's website for more detailed information on the content.
