Young People from Dresden Commemorated the Shoah on Franco-German Day
The Center for France | Francophonie at TU Dresden, the Goethe-Institut Dresden, the Saxon State Agency for Political Education, and the Institut français Dresden organized a joint evening event on January 21, 2020, at the Goethe-Institut Dresden as part of Franco-German Day.
This year, the day was dedicated to the theme “Germany and France: Together Against Antisemitism and Racism” by Mr. Armin Laschet, the Federal Republic of Germany’s Plenipotentiary for Franco-German Cultural Relations.
Franco-German Day is observed annually to commemorate the signing of the Élysée Treaty on Franco-German cooperation on January 22, 1963. Its goal is to familiarize young people in both countries with their respective neighbor, its history, and its cultural richness.
The evening was dedicated to the Polish-French writer Anna Langfus (1920–1966) . She was one of the first women among the Jewish survivors of the Shoah to process her experiences of persecution, murder, and survival through literature. In 1962, she was awarded the Prix Goncourt for her work.
In the first part of the evening, students from the Marie Curie Gymnasium and the TU Dresden read excerpts from Anna Langfus’s novel *Salz und Schwefel / Le sel et le soufre* (1964) in German and French .
Afterward, literary scholar Dr. Aurélia Kalisky (Leibniz Center for Literary and Cultural Research, Berlin) discussed the author’s work and Holocaust literature with the audience.
