Dr. Torsten König - Transformations of a colonial capital: urban structures, institutions, popular and everyday culture

In the course of the 19th century, France establishes a colonial empire that stretches across all continents. Paris became the capital of this empire. What did this development mean for the city? How did colonial expansion change the urban structures of Paris and what traces did it leave behind?

Where did it leave its mark on popular and everyday culture? What is the relationship between the center, as perceived by the French, and the many peripheries of the empire? How does Paris present itself as a colonial capital?

Dr. Torsten König is Scientific Coordinator at the CFF. His research interests include the cultural history of colonialism.
