Autocracies are on the rise worldwide - including in Eastern Europe. Whether in Russia, Hungary or Slovakia, authoritarian politics are increasingly shaping state institutions, media and social spaces.
The 2026 annual conference of the German Association for East European Studies is dedicated to the various forms of authoritarian rule under the title "Authoritarianism and Violence in Eastern Europe". The conference will focus on the political functioning of authoritarian systems, their specific cultures of violence and the question of the social attractiveness of authoritarian politics, bringing together academics and interested parties to discuss and classify current developments in Eastern Europe.
The event is organized by the TUD Dresden University of Technology, the German Association for East European Studies, the Hannah Arendt Institute for Research on Totalitarianism
