Eurocity-discussion "Empty spaces, new opportunities?"
Despite various revitalization projects in recent decades, vacant and derelict sites continue to characterize the urban fabric of Görlitz - but they are more than just gaps in the urban space. In her dissertation, completed in 2025, Bettina Knoop from the IZS Görlitz, jointly operated by the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IÖR) and the IHI Zittau of the TUD, investigated how city dwellers perceive these spaces. In addition to existing challenges, the potential that local vacancies can open up for life in the city and for urban development becomes clear.
