Biography
Prof. Aßländer was born 1963, studied Business Administration, Economics, Philosophy, Sociology, Psychology and Russian in Bamberg, Vienna, Bochum, and Moscow. After obtaining his Diploma in Business Administration and his Magister Artium in Philosophy, he worked as a self-employed lecturer for the chamber of industry and commerce for five years.
From 1997 to 1999, he was a research assistant at the Chair of Philosophy II at the Otto-Friedrich University Bamberg, where he earned his doctorate in philosophy (Dr. phil.) in 1998. From 1999 to 2005, he was senior research assistant at the Chair for Social Sciences at the International Institute (IHI) Zittau, where he obtained his habilitation in 2005 (Dr. rer. pol. habil.) and his venia legendi for social sciences, esp. business ethics. From 2005 to 2010, he was the Endowed Professor for Economic and Business Ethics at the University of Kassel.
Michael Aßländer acted as the secretary of the European Business Ethics Network Germany (Deutsches Netzwerk Wirtschaftsethik, DNWE) from 2000 to 2005 and was deputy chair of its board from 2005 to 2010. He was a member of the founding board of the Austrian Business Ethics Network (Österreichisches Netzwerk Wirtschaftsethik, OeNWE) and was its deputy chairman from 2004 to 2021. From 2005 to 2010, he edited the DNWE journal "Forum Wirtschaftsethik" and since 2014, he acts as the chairman of the awards committee for the DNWE's business ethics award. From 2008 to 2016, he was a member of the executive committee of the European Business Ethics Network (EBEN). Since 2006, he is a member of the scientific advisory board of the Zeitschrift für Wirtschafts- und Unternehmensethik (ZfWU).
Michael Aßländer regularly serves as a reviewer for academic journals (e.g., Business Ethics Quarterly, Journal of Business Ethics, and the Zeitschrift für Wirtschafts- und Unternehmensethik) and foundations (e.g., Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Hans Böckler Stiftung, Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes). Besides his contribution to numerous national and international scientific advisory boards and program committees, he was involved in various projects on fighting corruption, business ethics education and capacity building for several organizations (such as the OECD) in Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Albania, and Belarus. In addition to this, he took part in the development of the ISO 26000:2010 Guidance on social responsibility as a representative of the European Business Ethics Network. Besides his teaching activities at the Technical University Dresden, Michael Aßländer has taught as a guest lecturer in Minsk, Istanbul, Kaunas, and Zurich.
His current research focus includes theoretical and practice-oriented questions regarding economic and business ethics, corporate citizenship, corporate social responsibility, the social history of human labor, and the theoretical history of political economy.
