The course consists of a series of lectures on "Academic Skills for Computer Scientists (ASiCS)" and a series of exercises on text processing, language prototyping, and other important skills for your Master's or PhD process.
In the lectures, the ADED research process is discussed with the phases Analysis - Design - Evaluation - Diffusion. The focus is on structuring of talks, papers and theses, writing good controlling ideas and thesis statements. But also questions such as "How to choose an evaluation method for my research hypothesis?" or "What is science?" are tackled.
The courses' exercises present tools for text processing, such as LaTex, as well as tools to simplify the construction and tests of software prototypes.
The course language is English; though some German examples might also be interspersed.
The course is structured into units. Students who want to acquire 6cp have to study all 7 units. Students who want to acquire 4cp should select 5 units. For 2cp, 3 units should be selected. For instance, a Master's student should select those units which are not relevant to PhD. A PhD student of the ROSI PhD training group should chose all units to earn 6cp.
Teachers in 2016 are Prof. Dr. Uwe Aßmann and Dr. Sebastian Götz.
- recommended for Master students of all programs of the department of computer science, also for CL and DSE, for the preparation of the Masters or Diploma thesis.
- also possible for students on the Bachelor level. Some basic components of the course are also contained in a separate course "Vorbereitung von Abschlussarbeiten (VBA)".
- Obligatory for PhD students in the ROSI training group.
