Program description
The Boysen-TU Dresden-Summer School 'Mobility in Transition' 2021 aims at tackling possible pathways of future mobility by creating an interdisciplinary understanding of the complexity of the whole transport system, while focusing on specific elements, developments, drivers, and impacts. Thereby, transport systems can be considered as socio-technical systems, characterized by the interplay of humans and technology. The summer school tries to shed light onto the interconnected elements: Policy and Governance, Technologies and Infrastructures, Markets, Culture and Mobility patterns.
The Summer School programme focuses on the following three leading questions:
- Which challenges stem from the mobility transition?
- Which disruptive technologies and innovations drive the mobility transition?
- Which technological and societal solutions on international scale should be pursued to foster the mobility transition?
The participants can engage with the interdisciplinary facets of the mobility transition through from key-note lectures, fish bowl discussions, and presentations by high-profile, international and national researchers, policy-makers and practitioners. Moreover, event formats and panel discussions are organized in close cooperation with DRESDEN-Concept partners such as the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IÖR) and UNU Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and of Resources (UNU-FLORES).

Learning outcomes for the participants
The Boysen-TU Dresden-Summer School aims to make the participants aware of complex socio-technical nature of transport systems and ongoing processes of change. They should be equipped with the knowledge and skills to understand the multiple causality and insights into the co-evolution of independent developments reinforcing each other. Furthermore, the programme aims to make them able to reflect the position of their own discipline within the mobility transition and to understand the benefits of interdisciplinary cooperation. In addition, participants will obtain the opportunity to publish their own scientific research in a special issue of the peer-reviewed journal „Sustainability“ (IF: 2.8).
