Brief Description
Hydrogen produced from renewable resources (green hydrogen) is regarded as a key energy carrier for the energy revolution. Hydrogen can be transported and stored easily compared to electricity, and can be converted into heat, power or electricity according to demand. This makes it possible to compensate for temporal and spatial fluctuations in electricity generation from solar or wind energy, which are unavoidable due to weather conditions. Potential areas of application include electricity and heat supply, use as fuel in mobility and as a raw material in the chemical industry and refinery. The possibility of regional production of hydrogen can reduce the use of imported fossil fuels in the long term, thus establishing regional value creation.
The innovation project HYPOS (Hydrogen Power Storage & Solutions East Germany) comprises the development of innovative solutions for the economical supply of green hydrogen produced from electricity. The focus is on the development of a model region in Central Germany, which offers favourable conditions due to already existing infrastructures and future marketing potentials. In the form of an open consortium, HYPOS opens up the possibility of advancing and establishing technical-technological developments along the entire value chain, from electrolysis to the production of green hydrogen via transport and storage to application. The aim is the large-scale implementation of green hydrogen applications.
The joint project H2-INES is derived from this strategy in addition to a large number of joint projects. H2-INES serves to the integrative increase of the safety level of the HYPOS value chain. The subproject, which is being carried out at the Chair of Hydrogen and Nuclear Energy, deals with the implementation of probabilistic risk analyses for technical and human failure and the development of safety-related optimisation recommendations. The aim is to draw up a guideline "Hydrogen Safety" in which basic safety-related and organisational measures are defined to enable the operation of hydrogen generating, transporting, storing and utilising plants with a sufficiently low risk.
