Strömungsverhalten komplexer Fluide

Here the action of magnetic forces is one of our major research topics. The measuring technology used in conventional fluid mechanics is often not applicable to magnetically controlled fluids or for the investigation of flows under complex boundary conditions.

Rheology of complex fluids

Aside from the magnetic fluids we have here especially focused on metallic melts with suspended particles showing unusually high changes in viscosity as a function of volume concentration of the suspended particles. In all these materials, we are mainly interested in the microscopical reasons of the rheological effects.

Development of measuring technology

Beside these questions related to complex fluids we have a second focus of our research lines which deals with the development of measuring technology for certain fluid mechanical or material science problems.

Competencies

The research activities at the Chair of Magnetofluiddynamics, Measuring and Automation Technology are - as the name already says - subdivided in two main research directions being closely related to each other. On the one hand, we deal with the study of the properties and flow characteristics of complex fluids under action of external fields. Here the action of magnetic forces is one of our major research topics. The measuring technology used in conventional fluid mechanics is often not applicable to magnetically controlled fluids or for the investigation of flows under complex boundary conditions. Thus, it is clear that the second main line of our research concerns the development
of measuring technology. This development is always focused on the concrete problems resulting from our fluid mechanics or material science interests.

Forschungsgebiete und Publikationen

Gas turbine cooling

For the investigation of fluid mechanics processes in gas turbine cooling applications, very special boundary conditions have to be considered. Especially the high rotation rates coupled with extreme accelerations in the rotating chambers require the development of adapted measuring technology.

X-ray microtomography

One of our working horses in measuring technology is X-ray microtomography. With two tomography setups with matched parameter ranges, we are able to perform three-dimensional investigations of the full range of samples from biological tissue - e.g. samples loaded with magnetic nanoparticles in biomedical applications of ferrofluids - via porous structures like ceramics up to metallic samples.
