Construction materials testing technicians (geotechnical engineers) typically work in laboratories or at construction sites. They are responsible for examining the various soil types for their physical-structural properties and ascertain whether they are suitable for use as construction materials. Construction materials testing technicians take soil samples from the construction site needed for measuring procedures and bring them to the laboratory for further testing. They then independently conduct and evaluate the laboratory trials. Construction materials testing technicians are also responsible for autonomously conducting field tests. This varied work entails preliminary exploration for construction projects, testing soil for its suitability for building and monitoring the proper production of earthworks.

The vocational training program focuses on

• Knowledge of test specifications and policies
• Sample collection by drilling and sounding
• Experimentation for classifying soils
• Identification of the pressure resistance and shearing strength of soils
• Compaction control tests of earthworks
• Assessment of the usability of soils and recycled materials for earthworks and hydraulic structures
• Documentation and measurement of deep excavations that can affect groundwater

Requirements

Scientific-technical understanding, good knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry and technology, manual dexterity, good grades in school and an interest in technology
