Arising from the creation of quarks and gluons, jets are abundantly produced and observed at the LHC. They occur with large probabilities in the final state of many interesting processes, and are therefore very useful in search for new physics. Jets comprise a narrow cone of hadrons which can be detected in the experiments. In this talk I will describe how jets are reconstructed and calibrated in the ATLAS experiment. We will also see how the substructure of a jet is used for identifying the origin the jet. Finally a few measurements and searches that have been performed in ATLAS, employing jets or jet substructure will be presented.
