Seminar: Technology Transfer - HEP Detectors in Radiotherapy (Jens Weingarten)
01069 Dresden
Radiotherapy is one of the key components in modern cancer therapy. The goal is to deposit sufficient dose in each tumor cell to damage it beyond repair, triggering the cell to kill itself. The safety and quality of the treatment crucially depends on precise monitoring of the beam parameters and the dose deposition inside the patient. The requirements for detectors used in radiotherapy, especially using protons and heavier ions, turn out to be reasonably similar to those for modern high energy physics detectors: radiation hardness, hit efficiency and hit rate.
In this talk I will present our technology transfer activities, using ATLAS IBL Pixel Detectors in various applications in proton radiotherapy, ranging from beam monitoring to proton radiography.
