Inhalt
The sixteenth century can be characterised as a transitional period from the very late Middle Ages to the breakthrough of the Early Modern Age. Dynastically, the century sees the rise and end of the Tudor family with five monarchs from Henry VII to Elizabeth I. In foreign political terms, it is the time of England’s gradual rise to maritime power. Religiously and intellectually, Humanism and the English Reformation are key-terms that highlight a specific English development in cultural history. In fine arts, music and literature, England starts to contribute prominently to European culture with a special role of (not only Shakespearean) drama as a mix of popular and high culture. It is an age of discoveries – geographical, intellectual, religious, artistic and many others – that has held students of the period in its spell for many centuries.
This lecture will not only introduce major developments in an exemplary fashion and discuss them as cultural practices of the 16th century, but it will also take into consideration how these are reflected and depicted in the 21st century.
