Admission requirements

Eligible for admission are applicants who
1. have obtained a first university degree recognized in Germany or a degree from a state or state-recognized university of cooperative education in law or can prove sufficient knowledge of law within the framework of special aptitude upon completion of a non-law university degree,
2. demonstrate relevant professional activity, which usually has lasted for one year,
3. demonstrate proficient command of the English language at the advanced level B2 (B2+) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, and
4. provide proof of special suitability for studying in the postgraduate Master's program International Studies in Intellectual Property Law and Data Law in accordance with the suitability assessment regulations. If necessary, a suitability interview will also be conducted.

Notes on the application process

The tuition fee of EUR 2,500 must be paid each semester. Should the winter semester be spent at a partner university, the tuition fee may be reduced for that semester.

If, at the time of application, proof of the first degree qualifying the applicant for a profession is not yet available, the application will be considered under the precondition that 80% of the credit points attainable for the degree have already been achieved based on completed module examinations or the final thesis and the colloquium (if applicable). A certification from the awarding institute of higher education (examination office) serves as proof of the above-mentioned academic achievements. The objective of the Master’s program is to intensify focus on industrial property rights and copyright law – an area which has long been neglected in university curricula – in order to pave the way for a degree in these areas of law which is in particularly high demand in the professional world as a response to the ever increasing market globalization.

The degree program prepares students for a career in these areas at commercial enterprises, official authorities and law firms in Germany and abroad. Should students wish to find work in Germany, they also have the option to take a module in German to learn the specifics of intellectual property law in Germany. Students also have the opportunity to obtain the theoretical knowledge required of a lawyer specializing in industrial property rights.

In view of this, the degree program also provides knowledge in the field of industrial property rights and copyright in a German, European and international context. Through the opportunity to study abroad, students receive insight into foreign legal systems and they have a chance to learn technical terms in a foreign language – an absolute necessity for anyone wishing to pursue a career in an international setting.

Study contents

The one-year LL.M. degree program “International Studies in Intellectual Property Law and Data Law” enables specialization in the areas of copyright, trademark and patent law as well as competition law and data law. An in-depth look is taken at legal issues in conjunction with new technologies, multimedia and the internet.

Students graduate with a Master of Laws degree (LL.M.) in “International Studies in Intellectual Property Law and Data Law.” The program affords them

A semester abroad as part of the LL.M. degree program is highly recommended and is easy to integrate into the course of study. Students can study at partner universities in the following cities: Exeter, London, Prague, Strasbourg, Szeged, Seattle, Tallinn, Tokyo or Kraków. If you intend to complete one semester of your studies at the Centre d ́Etudes Internationales de la Propriété Intellectuelle in Strasbourg, you are required to have a solid command of French at level B2 of the European Framework of Reference for Languages.
