Study Opportunities for Refugees
Table of contents
We are working hard to enable all students in Dresden who are threatened or affected by war to continue their studies.
TUD has a variety of support programs to help refugees enroll in higher education. These include free subject-specific courses and language courses to help prepare for a degree program, entry via a flexible exchange program for refugee students in advanced studies, as well as individualized academic advising and a buddy program, which offers support during the first steps in Dresden and at the university.
In the Study Information System (SINS) you can find the degree programs offered at TU Dresden and their admission requirements. You can also filter results based on the language of instruction:
Depending on the requirements, the following options can be taken.
1. Prospective students who have not yet started a degree program
On the Application page, you will find all the information about admission requirements and deadlines. When applying to study at TU Dresden, please pay particular attention to the information on the application procedure for international applicants available in German and English.
If only indirect access to studies can be granted due to missing qualifications, international students can prepare for the assessment test at TUDIAS Preparatory College. For refugees and displaced persons, this program is free of charge thanks to Integra funding from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
2. Students who have started but not yet completed their studies at an officially recognized institution of higher education
Students who meet all the admission requirements can apply to study in a more advanced semester, as stated in the case above, plus they can have their previous academic achievements recognized via a credit recognition procedure.
3. Exchange Students
If you have already studied in Ukraine for a few semesters, you can also apply as a so-called freemover for the exchange study program. This flexible option allows you to be enrolled as a student at TU Dresden for one to two semesters without completing a degree.
With an enrollment in the exchange program you can bridge the time until the possible continuation of studies at your home university and acquire credit points at the TU Dresden, which you can later get recognized at your home university if necessary.
The entry via the exchange study program can also be used for a flexible entry into a study program with a degree at the TU Dresden. You can obtain credits as an exchange student and acquire the required language skills in parallel. After passing the language exam and applying for recognition of your previous academic achievements (from your studies at your home university and those at TU Dresden), you have the opportunity to switch to a regular degree program after one or two semesters.
Further information also on the application can be found here.
4. Guest students
At TU Dresden you may attend courses as a "guest student" without having to apply for a degree program. All you need to do is submit an application in which you provide information about the desired courses. Together with your application, you can also request a login for the use of TU Dresden's IT resources.
You can also obtain guest student status while attending an intensive German course, including those that prepare you for your studies. For refugees, the guest student status is free of charge.
Further information can be found under "How can asylum seekers apply to become a guest student?" on the guest students page.
