1. Journalistic guidelines and legal responsibilities
The Universitätsjournal is the newspaper of TU Dresden. It is issued by the Rector. The Editor in Chief bears full legal responsibility in terms of the German Press Law (V.i.S.d.P).
The Universitätsjournal content has its foundations in German Basic Law, it is not affiliated with any political parties and does not pursue one-sided political-ideological interests. The Editorial Office and Publisher of the Universitätsjournal work on the basis of the Press Law of the Free State of Saxony (SächsPresseG). The Universitätsjournal rigorously observes the journalistic principles of the Deutsche Presserat (German Press Council) Press Code and the guidelines derived from it in its journalistic and editorial activity. Furthermore, the Communication Code of the German Public Relations Council and the Media Code of Netzwerk Recherche (Research Network) also apply.
2. Journalistic objectives
The Universitätsjournal pursues three main objectives:
- It functions as a means of communication for all elected administrative bodies, management teams, delegates and committees of TU Dresden, as defined in the Act on the Autonomy of Institutions of Higher Education in the Free State of Saxony (Sächsisches Hochschulfreiheitsgesetz).
- It promotes internal university communication.
- It promotes the representation of TU Dresden in fields external to the university such as politics, business, culture, education and the general public on a municipal, regional and national level.
If a university offers a unique environment for intellectual work and discussion, it thus follows that the Universitätsjournal fundamentally adheres to the principles of intellectual candor and discussion.
3. Editorial work
In order to achieve the basic journalistic objectives, the Universitätsjournal Editorial Office works independently, with the aim of balanced and truthful reporting. The Editor in Chief bears full responsibility to the Publisher for the implementation of the basic journalistic objectives.
The Editors are bound to the principles of truth, relevance and journalistic diligence. They pledge to adhere to the Press Code with their names. Pseudonyms are only permissible for non-permanent employees who demonstrate a legitimate interest in their use.
Editors or employees carrying out journalistic work for the Universitätsjournal may refuse to write articles that conflict with objective reporting or to participate in editorial activities that obstruct the truthfulness of publications. Refusing parties will not face any penalties.
As a rule, articles that appear in the Universitätsjournal are journalistic texts which are researched and written independently on the authors’ own responsibility. For this reason, articles are only submitted to the interlocutor for approval prior to publication at the author's request.
