Basic E-Mail Client Configuration

The certificates of the DFN PKI can be used to digitally sign and encrypt e-mails. The standardized procedure for usage of certificates is S/MIME (Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions).
In order to use your certificate for digital signatures as well as for sending encrypted messages to other people, you have to configure your e-mail client accordingly. In the following the basic configuration of an e-mail client in (combination with the DFN PKI certificates) is described:
MOZILLA Thunderbird
As of Thunderbird version 2.0.0.23 (respectively Beta 3) the root certificate of the Deutsche Telekom is included. You have to accomplish further configurations in Thunderbird in oder to use the DFN PKI certificate. In the case of older versions, please apply a sofware update before.
Microsoft Outlook 2007/2010
Microsoft Outlook 2007 as well as 2010 use the system-wide certificate memory of Microsoft Windows. That's why there's no need for general settings.
Mac OS X 10.6 Mail
Mac OS X 10.6 also contains a root certificate of the Deutsche Telekom by default. That's why there's no need for general settings.
