OpenVPN on smartphones and tablets

Here you will find a small step-by-step guide for setting up OpenVPN on Android and iOS devices.

Android

All steps must be performed on the Android smartphone or tablet.

• There are two apps available for download and installation:
  • OpenVPN Connect (official, closed source) Google Play Store
  • OpenVPN for Android (inofficial, open source) F-Droid or Google Play
• Obtain an appropriate profile from the OpenVPN profile generator in the Self-Service Portal
• Open the OpenVPN Profile and agree to the import with OK
• Enter your username at Username (your <zih-login>) and add your profile
• Start the imported profile
• The connection was successfully established

iOS

All steps must be performed on the iPhone or iPad.

• Download the app from the  App Store
• Obtain an appropriate profile from the OpenVPN profile generator in the Self-Service Portal
• Search for the profile file in the "Files" app (usually in the download folder)
• Copy the profile file to the OpenVPN app via the "Share" menu

• Add the configuration file

• Enter your zih-login as username

• Add the configuration profile

• Establish connection

• Enter your password

• You should now have successfully established a connection
