Transfer of .pst-file from HORDE to Exchange
There are two possibilities how to transfer your emails from your present mailbox (normally HORDE mailbox) to Exchange with MS Outlook.
Create each an account, for HORDE as well as for the Exchange mailbox in MS Outlook and transfer your emails, calendar etc. via mouse (drag and drop).
Alternatively you can export the emails from the HORDE account as .pst-file and import those files into the Exchange account.
Note: When importing the pst-file successfully it can take more than one hour, depending on the size of the imported mailbox, until emails will be shown correctly in all their folders in the Exchange mailbox. Here you can find the manual of the drag and drop method.
1. Start MS Outlook and create a new account for your Exchange mailbox, if not existing yet. You can find the manual by clicking on Configuration of MS Outlook.
2. Create an account for your HORDE mailbox now.
Please click on "File“ -> "Information“ -> "Add account“
In the next window please enter your name and the real address of your HORDE mailbox (ZIH mailbox) like this: zih-login@mail.zih.tu-dresden.de as well as your ZIH password and confirm your entry by clicking "Next“:
After a few minutes three green ticks will appear which mean that the configuration was successful. Close the configuration by clicking on the "Finish" button:
You are now entering the Outlook account overview. On the left column you can see the folders (inbox, sent, elements etc.) and subfolders beneath each mailbox "mail.zih.tu-dresden.de" or "msx.tu-dresden.de".
3. Create a .pst-file from the data of your HORDE account.
Click with the right mouse key on the name "mail.zih.tu-dresden.de" and select "Account properties“ in the opening context menu.
Select "Open“.
Select "Import“.
Mark "Export in file“ in the shortlist.
Select "Outlook-file data (.pst)“ as file type.
Select your HORDE account "zih-login@mail.zih.tu-dresden.de“ as source folder for the data export.
Enter a storage location where you can easily find your pst-file (e.g. "Desktop“). Please pay attention that there is sufficient storage capacity.
You can protect the file to be created with a password that will be requested in later use if you like. If you don’t want to enter a password, leave the window by clicking "Ok“.
By this the export process will be completed. All "mail.zih.tu-dresden.de“ account data are now located in the .pst-file.In the next step, this file will be imported in your Exchange mailbox and your emails, contacts etc. will be transferred.
4. Import your data from the .pst-file into the Exchange mailbox.
Click with the right mouse key on the name of your "msx.tu-dresden.de" account and select "Account properties“ in the opening context menu.
Select "Open“.
Select "Import“.
Select "Import from other programs or files“.
Select (.pst) as file type for the "Outlook data file“ to be imported.
Enter the storage location of the newly created pst-file and select it by clicking on the "Search for“ button.
Your .pst file will be opened under the designation "Outlook data file“. Leave the default settings and start the import process by clicking "Finish“.
Now you can find all your emails, contacts etc. of your HORDE mailbox in your Exchange mailbox with the same folder structure.
When importing the pst-file successfully it can take more than one hour, depending on the size of the imported mailbox, until emails will be shown correctly in all their folders in the Exchange mailbox. Please be patient.
Verify the import process by checking the (new) folders of integrity and accordance with the HORDE mailbox on a random basis. After completing the verification successfully you should delete the HORDE account from MS Outlook.
Note: Your HORDE mailbox won’t be deleted on the ZIH mail server. For technical reasons it will continue to exist for the moment.
5. Delete the HORDE account in MS Outlook:
Click with the right mouse key on the name of the "msx.tu-dresden.de“ account and select the option "Delete …mail.zih.tu-dresden.de“ from the context menu.
Confirm with "Yes“.
