Creating a spam filter rule for the email header line ‘X-TUD-SPAM-STATUS’
Every email that passes from the TU Mail Gateway traverses a spam filter. When filtering, each email receives two header lines (X-TUD-Spam-Status, X-TUD-Spam-Level). The here described method of spam filtering is based on the request of the header line ‘X-TUD-Spam-Status’. The creation of the rule happens in the WebClient OWA.
Note: All emails are scanned once again for spam in the MS Exchange server and moved to the junk email box automatically, according to specific criteria.
1. Open the OWA via https://msx.tu-dresden.de and log on with your ZIH login name and the corresponding password on the homepage. Please allow pop-ups for the website ‘msx.tu-dresden.de’ on your internet browser:
Example Mozilla Firefox: Press ‘Alt’ in order to view the menu bar -> Select ‘Tools’ -> Command ‘Options’ -> Section ‘Content’ -> ‘Exceptions’ and declare pop-up-window for the website ‘msx.tu-dresden.de’ as an exception:
Example Internet Explorer: Press ‘Alt’ for the menu bar view -> select from the menu ‘Tools’ -> the command ‘Pop-up blocker’ -> ‘Pop-up blocker settings’ -> add ‘msx.tu-dresden.de’ as approved address.
- Click on the ‘gear’ on the right side of the menu bar and select ‘Options’:
3. Select ‘organize email’ and ‘inbox rules’ in the option menu. In order to create a new rule click on the plus sign '+';
4. Select ‘Create a new rule for arriving messages…’ from the pull-down menu, now.
5. The menu ‘new inbox rule’ opens. Assign a name for the rule (e.g. ‘Header contains X-TUD-Spam-Level: ****’). First of all, click on the link ‘More options…’ in order to increase the selection. Open the pull-down menu under ‘*When the message arrives, and:’. Select ‘It includes these words’ -> ‘in the message header…’.
6. Add ‘X-TUD-Spam-Level: ****’ (without quotation mark) into the input line. Take over the ‘+’ by clicking on it.
Note: The number of *-signs in the ‘X-TUD-Spam-Level’ shows the probability with which an email is classified as spam. Practice, however, has shown that an email with more than four to five stars ("****" -"*****") represents real spam with a high degree of probability. That is why it will move directly into the spam folder and not into the inbox folder.
7. Please choose now what shall happen to emails that have been recognized as spam. Under ‘Do the following’ -> you can select ‘Move, copy, or delete’ -> and in the submenu ‘Move the message to folder…’.
8. Please specify the inbox folder in which your spam mails have to be moved. The standard spam folder for a MS Exchange inbox is called ‘Junk email’. Finish the rule creation by clicking on ‘Save’.
