AQUA
What are AQUA Events?
The Field of General Qualification (AQUA) is part of every Bachelor's program at TU Dresden and is designed to provide students with interdisciplinary key qualifications.
The AQUA field consists of two modules in which a total of 20 credit points must be earned:
- AQUA I: announced courses of the entire Faculty of Arts, Humanities, and Social Science, events/courses of studium generale (e.g. interdisciplinary general and special key qualifications) and/or foreign languages (10 credit points)
- AQUA II: practical work / internship (10 credit points)
You will find additional information about the AQUA field on the website of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science.
You can freely choose from the range of AQUA-Events of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences which are of interest to you. In addition, you can attend events of studium generale as well as language courses. Please note that at least one of the AQUA courses you attended has to be graded. For the remaining courses, a certificate of attendance is sufficient.
Graded examinations in the AQUA I module can be written examinations, seminar papers, presentations, and other oral examinations. Furthermore, portfolio accomplishments are also recognized by the IfK according to their effort. Students will receive 2 credit points for a written examination, 3 credit points for a seminar paper, and 1 credit point for an oral examination or a presentation.
Please note that the indicated credit points are approximate values. They may vary depending on the nature of the examination. If you have specific questions about certain examinations, please contact the respective lecturer directly. Please also note that separate rules apply to language courses taken before WS19/20.
Please note that the grade in the AQUA module is not included in the overall grade of the Bachelor's program (§12, paragraph 4-5 Prüfungsordnung).
There are two possibilities to proof AQUA accomplishments. If you pass an examination, you will receive a (graded) certificate of achievement (“Leistungsschein”). If you want to obtain a certificate of attendance (“Teilnahmeschein”), you have to document your attendance in that course on your own responsibility. Please use this attendance list.
In addition, please pay attention to the following instructions:
- In order to obtain a certificate of attendance, you must attend in at least 80 percent of the sessions, i.e. if a seminar consists of 15 sessions, you must be present for at least 12 sessions.
- You must create and fill in the attendance list on your own responsibility and submit it to the respective lecturer for signature after each session.
- Please fill in all calendar weeks of the lecture period. In case of absence (holidays, lecturer's inability to attend), please make a note.
When you have collected all credit points for the AQUA I module, make an appointment with the AQUA representative of the IfK. Please bring all certificates of attendance and achievement, your language certificates, and theAQUA I form (PO 2019) to this appointment. The AQUA representative checks the completeness and correctness of the information and sends the proof to the examination office. Students do not have to forward their AQUA I certificates to the examination office themselves!
Surveys among graduates of other communication or journalism programs have shown that those who work in journalism or public relations have already made working experience during their studies – for example through internships. For this reason, the AQUA II module consists of a mandatory internship of six weeks (full-time)/240 hours.
Upon passing the AQUA II module examination, 10 credit points are acquired. The module examination consists of an ungraded internship report (60 hours). Further requirements for passing the module according to §14 paragraph 1 of the Prüfungsordnung is a proof of the completed internship on behalf of the internship provider.
When looking for an internship, please note that the scope of work as well as the internship tasks must meet the requirements of the Studienordnung. Please also read the notes on the implementation and recognition of the internship, in which you will find additional information on the internship report. It is strongly recommended that the internship is completed full-time. If this is not possible, we recommend that the internship is completed with at least 20 hours/week (and 240 hours total).
The IfK does not provide internships. However, many job postings for internships in areas relevant to communication studies are regularly published on the IfK website.
Once you have found an internship, fill in the first page of the following form and have it signed by the AQUA representative of the IfK. The second page of the form must be signed and stamped by the employer upon completion of the internship. Please submit the form along with the internship report to the AQUA representative of the IfK. Students do not have to forward their AQUA II certificates to the examination office themselves!
If the first page of the form has been signed by the AQUA representative of the IfK, this is your guarantee that the internship (if you complete it) will be recognized. If you have forgotten to do this, recognition is still possible if the internship meets the requirements of the Studienordnung.
You are free to decide when to submit the forms and the internship report to the AQUA representative of the IfK. However, keep in mind that it takes some time to review the internship report and forward the documents to the examination office.
