The Center for Information Services and High-Performance Computing is the heart of the IT and communication infrastructure at TUD. It is also one of Germany’s nine National High-Performance Computing Centers, providing the computing capacity necessary for research and empowering scientists in handling data.

Data is everything – no matter the field of research. The best data is also FAIR: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable. The German National Research Data Infrastructure was founded to coordinate this across numerous consortia. With NFDI4Earth, TUD is responsible for collecting and systematizing data in earth system sciences.

Data acquisition, data analysis and AI need the right hardware to work. Dresden is the European center for semiconductor technology. In a cleanroom laboratory, TUD is researching the foundations of this technology – chips that are efficient, sustainable and ready for real-time processing. The human brain has even been replicated for this purpose with SpiNNaker2.

Modern IT and AI use and analyze patient data to help provide people with rare diseases or certain types of cancer with more targeted treatment. Of course, digital health can only work with modern medical device legislation for regulating the use of anything from apps to VR glasses. And at TUD, we even have a Chair working in this field.

What makes a system ‘intelligent?’ How can we develop systems like this and break new ground? And how can we equip people with the skills they need to work with AI? Researchers at the Center for Scalable Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (ScaDS.AI) and the Konrad Zuse Schools of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence (SECAI) are looking for the answers.

How does healthcare change with the help of robotics? How can we integrate robotics into our work and how will novel human-machine interactions aid us in learning new skills? The Centre for Tactile Internet with Human-in-the-Loop (CeTI) is developing communication networks and human-machine interfaces to make robotics and thus learning new skills widely accessible.

AI here, big data there – are machines here to help us or should we be frightened of their power? What effect does digitalization have on our society? How do digital learning and teaching work? Researchers cross disciplinary boundaries to question current technologies, their origins, and their impacts on our modern world.
