User information for students

Assigning a user ID and allocating user authorization

During enrollment, a user ID (login name and initial password) is generated for each student. In addition to the ZIH login, a coupon is generated for each student. This ZIH login will be sent to the student by e-mail. After entering the coupon number in the  coupon portal, the user will see his new ZIH login.
If and when the student deregisters from TUD, the ZIH will immediately block and delete the user account.
Occasionally, the user will be reminded that authorization for usage is given exclusively for the purpose of research, teaching and study.
In order to use the ZIH's services - such as e-mail, WLAN, etc., it is necessary to activate the ZIH login via the coupon portal.

E-mail address
After user authorization is complete, a mailbox with an e-mail address: Firstname.SurnameNNN@mailbox.tu-dresden.de will be provided. (NNN is used for the identification of several users with the same name, e.g. paul.meier, paul.meier2, ....)
You must enter your ZIH login name and password to access the mailbox. This mailbox is used by the TUD for important school-related information (renewal of matriculation, semester contribution) and should be opened and read regularly.

Home Directory
This disk space is available for you on all login servers and in many PC pools. You can use it for personal files, web pages found on the public_html folder, and/or e-mail storage (Webmail).

VPN and WLAN
With your ZIH user identification, you can dial into the WLAN on the campus (eduroam). On the road or at home, you can access the campus network using VPN technology. The VPN access allows you to use resources of the TU Dresden and the SLUB from any terminal outside the TU Dresden network safely and securely. With the help of VPN technology, an external user (e.g. Internet access via DSL) can have a (virtual) connection to the (private) network of the TU Dresden.
