Schulz und Schulz
Ansgar and Benedikt Schulz
University Professors, Dipl.-Ing. Architects BDA DWB
Born in 1966 and 1968, both brothers studied architecture at the RWTH Aachen and the ETSA de Madrid/Spain (Ansgar) and the UC de Asunción/Paraguay (Benedikt). During their studies, they founded the Leipzig-based Schulz und Schulz office in 1992. The office's highly acclaimed projects include the Cloud Laboratory in Leipzig, the new building for St. Trinitatis in Leipzig, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Vienna/Austria and the extension of the North Rhine-Westphalia State Parliament in Düsseldorf.
From 2010 to 2018, they researched and taught as professors at TU Dortmund University, where they jointly headed the Chair of Building Construction at the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering. Since 2018, they have been Professors of Design and Construction at the Faculty of Architecture at the TUD Dresden University of Technology. In 2022, Ansgar and Benedikt Schulz taught as visiting professors at the Universidad de Buenos Aires.
Ansgar and Benedikt Schulz have received numerous awards for their work, including the European Balthasar Neumann Prize and the International Prize for Sacred Architecture. The Propsteikirche St. Trinitatis, which they designed, was named "Religious Building of the Year" at the World Architecture Festival WAF 2016. In 2018, they received the DAI Grand Prize for Building Culture as an honorary award for their overall architectural work and for their services to building culture.
The brothers Ansgar and Benedikt Schulz are regular jury members for architectural competitions, planning assessments and architectural awards. They are often invited to guest critiques and guest lectures at colleges, universities and congresses. Ansgar and Benedikt Schulz have been appointed to the design advisory boards of various cities. As experts, they advise the respective committees on urban design and cityscape issues.
