Working Group planting and maintenance
Since winter semester 2023, the "AG Pflanzen und Pflegen" has been active again!
The working group has already been involved in the design and maintenance of various planting areas on campus in the past. Now all students and staff, regardless of their degree program or area of work, once again have the opportunity to participate and gain practical experience in planting.
Participation
Would you like to get your hands dirty and beautify the campus? Then sign up for the OPAL course of the AG Pflanzen und Pflegen and stay informed about news and planting and care assignments.

The planting and maintenance working group looks after several landscaped open spaces on campus, which not only serve to beautify the campus, but can also be used as practical learning spaces for students.
Teaching beds in the Hülße courtyard
In the inner courtyard of the Hülße building are the so-called teaching beds, which are regularly maintained and developed by the working group. In particular, they serve as a practice area for plant knowledge tests and allow students to directly apply their theoretical plant knowledge.
Pruning workshops
The Hülße-Hof shrub belt offers us the opportunity to hold regular pruning workshops. They demonstrate winter and summer pruning and show how overaged shrub plantings can be rejuvenated.
Areas in front of the Barkhausen building (BAR)
The new planting of the beds in front of the BAR building from spring 2025 complements the teaching areas on campus and gives us another demonstration object of site-appropriate plant use in a sunny, dry location. They were planted according to a student design.
Beds at the ASB
The beds in front of the Andreas Schubert Building (ASB) are planted with the "Silbersommer" perennial mix - a low-maintenance, heat- and drought-tolerant plant combination with high aesthetic appeal and high dynamic. We observe and monitor the development of the area.
Rescuing the perennials in front of the Zeltmensa
The beds in front of the Zeltmensa had fallen out of maintenance and would not last in the long term. We were therefore able to relocate the plants to a perennial planting on Mommsenstraße. Our "planting plan" was developed on an ad hoc basis through joint negotiation, as it was not clear beforehand how many plants we would be able to save - an exciting challenge!
The areas are an example of how well thought-out use and maintenance of plants can contribute to the enhancement of urban outdoor spaces. These campus areas make it possible to directly experience the combination of theory and practice in planting design and invite people to participate, observe and learn.
We strive for continuity in the maintenance of the areas, especially because we believe in the development and design of plantings through care. As a small team, we are always dependent on active support. If you are interested, please register on our mailing list - we look forward to hearing from you!
