Summer School | Circular Design Challenge 2023
In cooperation with the Faculty of Civil Engineering and the Chair of Technical Design, the Chair of Structural Design (Prof. Matthias Beckh) offered the "Circular Design Challenge", an interdisciplinary summer school that took place in Pillnitz Palace during the Pentecost break.
The transdisciplinary program brought together 25 participants from different continents who displayed great enthusiasm and dedication to sustainable design. The summer school focused on promoting circular design principles and encouraging resource efficiency through the reuse of elements in architectural projects and product designs.
The architectural task involved designing a lightweight structure for a summer pavilion in the garden of Pillnitz Palace, constructed utilizing reused linear elements of the abandoned building Victoria Factory in Heidenau. As part of the industrial design task, participants were challenged to radically rethink transportation and transform the "old mobility" into a "future mobility". The program facilitated networking opportunities and encouraged interdisciplinary collaboration, fostering a culture of sustainability and innovation among the participants.
Through a series of inspiring lectures from guest speakers, expert-led workshops, and collaborative work, participants developed innovative solutions that integrated circular economy concepts. A public presentation of the final ideas took place at the COSMO Science Forum on Saturday the 3rd of June. We congratulate the winners and thank all participants for their active participation and dedication to creating a greener and more sustainable future.
