Joint Workshop: Digital Design and 3D-Printing at University of Nairobi (UoN)
The Wissensarchitektur – Laboratory of Knowledge Architecture held a seminar on “Digital Design and 3D-Printing” during the international workshop “FICTIVE COMMONS” – on living in future Africa (29.03.19-11.04.2019) at the University of Nairobi (UoN). In the course of this seminar – fundamentals of digital design and manufacturing were taught, which the students could directly apply in their studio projects. The three required 3D-Printers were brought from TU Dresden (Prof. Joerg Noennig) and installed at the Department of Architecture & Building Science (UoN) and will remain there as a donation from the members of the KA Lab for future research and teaching activities.
The program was organized by the Chair of Fundamentals of Design (Prof. Jörg Joppien, TUD), the Università di Genova(Prof. Christiano Lepratti, dAD) and the Department of Architecture & Building Science (Arch. Musau Kimeu, University of Nairobi, UoN). The aim was to foster a collaborative approach between master students of the three universities to collectively address local and global issues of future living in Africa. An Architectural competition was held and 3 winning student teams were awarded through funding by the Association of Friends and Sponsors of TU Dresden e.V. (GFF).
Through excursions and site visits, as well as during studio work, the students could gain valuable insights. Furthermore it was a lot of fun for everyone and – fostered by the productive and welcoming atmosphere created during those days - sparked inspiration for follow-up programs in the future. The next workshop is being planned for the upcoming semester in September 2019 at University of Nairobi and will mainly address “Parametric Design and 3D Printing” for a wider audience of students.
