The mechanical signal box
Signalling technology in railway operations
Mechanical signal boxes have been securing railroad operations for more than a hundred years. Even though they have long been morally worn out, many of them still provide reliable service today.
In order to preserve knowledge about this type of interlocking, the Chair of Railway Signaling and Transport Safety Technology has produced a brochure that provides an insight into the function and mode of operation of the mechanical interlocking and its external installations.
A professional educational film has been produced in cooperation with the TU Dresden Media Center to give the reader a clear understanding of the various functionalities.
Animated graphics were created and integrated into the film to visualize the complex technical processes.
The film was shot in the railroad operations laboratory at TU Dresden and at Cunnersdorf station near Dresden.
