Profile
The Professorship for Organization deals with contemporary problems, practices and forms of organization and organizing as well as with their individual, societal and ecological consequences. We stand for an interdisciplinary approach to organization studies that draws on a broad range of theories and concepts from sociology, anthropology, history, and philosophy.
In our research, we often look at unusual, contradictory or puzzling phenomena in the world of organization and work. The phenomena that fascinate us most usually challenge current or taken-for-granted knowledge about organization and management, and thus call for theory development. A joint characteristic of our research activities is the theoretical focus on questions of temporality, i.e. the organizational handling, structuring and evaluation of time. In addition, we also aim at conducting research that is relevant for addressing the grand societal challenges of our time, e.g., in relation to climate, globalization, and digitization.
In teaching, we offer an extensive and integrated portfolio of introductory and advanced-level courses on topics at the interface of organization, strategy, sustainability, and technology. Our courses not only convey basic knowledge of the problem areas, theories and instruments of contemporary organization theory, but they also encourage students to develop a critical and reflective approach to organizations and their management from a variety of perspectives. Furthermore, the students learn to identify and analyze complex problems of organization and organizing, to develop their own research-based solutions, and to implement the latter in the context of existing (organizational) structures and processes.
In research and teaching, we cooperate with organization and management scholars at leading international universities, e.g. in Denmark, the Netherlands, the UK, USA, Canada and Austria. Particularly noteworthy are our long-standing research collaborations with the Department for Management, Society, and Communication and the Department for Organization at the Copenhagen Business School, one of the most renowned business schools in the world.
