Product Lifecycle Management
Table of contents
Product development involves thinking ahead to a technical solution that does not yet exist in terms of function, design, manufacture, use, etc. Drawings, calculations and models have always been used to illustrate and document the future product. Through information technology, digital models are becoming increasingly important to describe the product and its manufacture.
Product requirements, design drafts, CAD models, FEM calculations, work plans, maintenance instructions and much more must be managed, stored and distributed in a secure and structured manner. This is the task of product data management (PDM). Its optimal design is an important challenge of modern product development.
Product lifecycle management is a strategy for the holistic, company-wide administration and control of all product data and processes along the product lifecycle - from product development and production to product use, disassembly and recycling. With product lifecycle management, an environment is established through processes, methods and tools to make product information available in the right time, quality and sequence, and at the right place.
